Spinal injury is basically a damage incurred on any part of the nerves of the spinal canal or the spinal cord. The causes are changes in the sensation, strength and bodily functions near the site of the injury. Since this injury causes a drastic change in the daily routine of a person, the effects can be mental, social, and emotional, apart from physical.
The place of the injury and its extent is crucial in deciding the healing time. Following are the signs and symptoms which identify an emergency condition:
- Numbness, loss of sensation in the fingers, toes or feet, and hands
- Weakness, paralysis, or incoordination in any body part
- Extreme pressure or pain on the neck, back, or head
- Difficulty with walking
- Loss of bowel control or bladder
- Twisted or oddly positioned back or neck
- Impaired breathing post-injury
